Recommended Textbooks

This page details textbooks that have been recommended by experienced teachers across the world. They are roughly divided by syllabus but with such similar content (especially the IB and A-Level courses) some books may be useful for more than one course. However, for simplicity each book has been included only once.

GCSE Computer Science - Theory and Practice: Python Powered for Edexcel 2018

by N Harman
Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Book Depository (free worldwide shipping)

The unique thing about this GCSE textbook is its use of Python throughout. Although Edexcel gives schools a choice of programming languages, many do use Python - but this is the first book to integrate it with the core syllabus. This is great to see.

New GCSE Computer Science OCR Revision Guide - for the Grade 9-1 Course

by CGP Books
Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Book Depository (free worldwide shipping)

CGP are not well known for their Computer Science textbooks. This one appears to cover all of the OCR GCSE content. However, the chapters do not follow the order of the syllabus, which although not necessarily a bad thing, might make revision harder.

This new textbook endorsed by Cambridge International Examinations covers the new IGCSE Computer Science course (0478). All topics from the syllabus are covered and the book is also available as a Kindle edition in both the US and the UK.

There was a problem with earlier versions of this book, which were being supplied without the promised CD-ROM (in the UK at least). Hodder Education say they are working on the situation, but in the mean time the CD-ROM resources are available for free download from their website.

IB Computer Science Textbooks

This section contains recommended textbooks for the IB Computer Science course. Unlike many IB courses, there are no 'official' textbooks by Oxford University Press or Cambridge for Computer Science. This means no single book covers all of the syllabus requirements - some books cover theory very well but neglect practical aspects, or vice versa. Teachers usually pick a number of books to cover the syllabus content as best they can. The good news is that IB teachers are spoilt for choice, with a huge range of general Computer Science textbooks available. The best and most popular are listed below, divided by syllabus and topic area.

Core Syllabus

Computer Science Illuminated

Computer Science Illuminated

by Dale and Lewis
Amazon.com | Kindle | Amazon.co.uk | Book Depository (free worldwide shipping)

This is the latest version of the popular textbook which IB Computer Science teachers have been using for a few years. As with the previous versions, this book does not cover all the topics on the IB Computer Science syllabus, and for some topics the level of detail is too great. However, it remains one of the better textbooks available for the IB course. The new version contains information on accessing an accompanying interactive eBook.

Computer Science: An Overview

Computer Science: An Overview

by J. Glenn Brookshear and Dennis Brylow
Amazon.com | Kindle| Amazon.co.uk | Book Depository (free worldwide shipping)

This popular book is widely used by IB Computer Science teachers. It covers a wide range of topics and concepts, with a little less detail than Computer Science Illuminated (this is not always a bad thing). This latest version uses introduces Python to help students understand key computing concepts.

Note on versions: The 12th edition (displayed to the left) appears to be the latest version. The Global Edition (green and white cover) is available outside the US, while the Kindle Edition has not yet been updated and appears to still be the 11th Edition.

IB Computer Science textbook

Core Computer Science: For the IB Diploma Program

by Markos Hatzitaskos and Kostas Dimitriou
Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk

This is a new and promising textbook - the only written specifically for the IB Computer Science syllabus. The book covers all required topics and is a good reference source for students. My only wish is that it would have more practice activities and questions for students - and not include the answers immediately after the questions.

Option D - OO Programming

Absolute Java

Absolute Java

by Walter Savitch and Kenrick Mock
Amazon.com | Kindle| Amazon.co.uk | Book Depository (free worldwide shipping)

Absolute Java does an excellent job of explaining both practical programming techniques and programming theory, making it a good choice for the OOP option. It also assumes no prior knowledge of programming and so is an excellent book for beginners and a great option if you are going to use Java as the language of choice through the IB Computer Science course.

Advanced Computer Science: For the IB Diploma Program

by Markos Hatzitaskos and Kostas Dimitriou
Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk

This new Advanced Computer Science book is written by the same authors of the IB Core Computer Science textbook. Again, it is designed specifically for the IB syllabus.
